City officials may have found a way to add 15 or more uniformed law enforcement officials to the streets of Hazleton at little or no additional cost to the city or its taxpayers.
The uniformed officials are members of the oldest law enforcement organization in the state – the Pennsylvania State Constable.

A constable is an elected official who serves six-year terms. Following election, the constable is required to attend and pass an 80-hour training academy to receive certification through the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency under Act 44, and to successfully complete 40 hours of yearly updates on law and firearms training to maintain their certification.

Efforts to reach city Police Chief Robert Ferdinand for comment on the proposal Wednesday were unsuccessful.
The ordinance will face its first reading tonight. A second and third reading for final approval are scheduled for council’s Oct. 21 meeting
